The books definition of Imperialism is "the domination of one country of the political, economic, or cultural life by another country". So, the New Imperialism involves domination of other countries. However, in the New Imperialism, the dominators are the Europeans while the dominated are the Africans, the Indians, the Chinese, and the peoples of the Middle East. The major time period in which the New Imperialism occurred was during the 1800s. A major factor that started the New Imperialism was the concept of Nationalism, which is the ideology of having a strong sense of pride for one's country. However, another factor influenced when and why it occurred. That factor was the Industrial Revolution. Most of the Europeans, at the time, were carving up Africa for themselves. However, major European players, such as the British and the French, were getting territory in China and India as well.
So, to summarize, the definition of the New Imperialism is this:
The domination of the Africans, Indians, Chinese, and others in the 1800s by the Europeans due to Nationalism and the Industrial Revolution.
