Negative Effects of the New Imperialism

Most of the negative effects of the New Imperialism were seen by the people who were being conquered. These mostly include the Africans (land and rights were being taken away from them), the Indians (their religious beliefs and customs were being violated), and the Chinese (illegal goods were being shipped conspicuously to them). African land was almost completely divided up amongst all Europeans; however, they were also suffering under most European rule (especially in the Belgian Congo). 3 main Indian beliefs that the British violated were: 1. High caste Hindus traveled overseas as Sepoys, 2. The British allowed women to remarry, and 3. (this is the MAJOR one) the cartridges for new rifles were greased in animal fat that the Hindus either found sacred or forbidden. The illegal good was Opium, which is highly illegal in the British Empire but was still being shipped to the Chinese.

However, the conquered were not the only ones suffering. The Westerners, when trading with the Chinese, experienced a trade deficit, meaning that they were buying more than they were selling. Also, the Westerners were facing many problems with protests and riots in their colonies, protectorates, and spheres of influence.
