Positive Effects of the New Imperialism

Even though there were many problems for people because of the New Imperialism, there were also many positive effects of the New Imperialism. The Europeans were the people who benefited most from the New Imperialism. For instance, the Suez Canal was built by the French when they were in control of Egypt. This was a benefit to all Europeans (mostly the British) because it allowed for a much shorter trade route to get goods between China, India, and Europe. Also, many of the conquered regions were rich in resources that the Europeans could exploit. This helped increase the national wealth of most Europeans.

Even some of the conquered people benefited from foreign rule. Most of these were married women in India, who had to kill themselves if their husbands died before them previously. Under new rule, widows could remarry other people. Another country that benefited from foreign rule was China. This is because they were experiencing a trade surplus, meaning that they were exporting more of their porcelain, silk, and tea than they were importing European goods. This led to an increase in wealth for the Chinese.
